چکیده

[1] To accurately estimate the seismic energy radiated in an earthquake, it is important to use appropriate corrections for path and source effects. Using slip models obtained by inversion of seismic data, we examine the effect of directivity on estimates of radiated energy and develop a method to correct for this source effect. From our calculations we suggest that the directivity correction for the earthquakes we studied is less than a factor of three; we also conclude that the directivity correction for dip-slip earthquakes with rupture propagating along strike is less than a factor of two at teleseismic distances. Thus teleseismic energy estimates of large subduction zone earthquakes will not be significantly affected by directivity.

Effect of Fling-Step on Seismic Response of Steel Eccentrically Braced Frame Structures

Fling-step and forward directivity are two important characteristics of near-field earthquakes. Forward directivity occurs when the rupture propagates toward the site and arises in fault‐normal direction for strike‐slip faults. Fling-step is the consequence of permanent ground displacement imposed by near-field earthquakes and arises in strike-slip faults in the strike parallel direction. Fling...

Investigation of forward directivity effects on design spectra of industrial complexes near Assaluyeh fault

Recorded ground motions in near fault region have completely distinct nature from others that recorded in far field of the fault. Near source outcomes cause much of the seismic energy to appear in a single large and long period pulse at the beginning of the velocity record. Assaluyeh complex is located near the reverse Assaluyeh fault that is a segment of Mountain Front Fault. This complex cont...

Evaluating of Relative and Absolute Cumulative Input Energy Time History subjected to Forward Directivity Earthquakes

In this article, to study the effect of pulse-type near-fault earthquakes on the seismic demands of steel moment frames, 15-story 2D-frame was analyzed under the influence of 20 near-fields with forward directivity effect and 2 far-field records. The relationship between Effective Cyclic Energy, ECE and displacement demands, velocity and hysteretic curve of SDOF systems in two near- and far-fau...

Seismic Fragility Assessment of Steel SMRF Structures under Various Types of Near Fault Forward Directivity Ground Motions

In this paper, the seismic collapse probability of special steel moment-resisting frame (SSMRF) structures under near fault pulse-like and far fault ordinary ground motions is evaluated through fragility analysis. For this purpose, five sample frames with 3 to 15 stories are designed and imposed to the ground motion excitations with different characteristics. Fragility curves are derived for th...

Title: Radiated Energy and State of Stress during Earthquake Rupture

We determined the energy release in earthquakes using the data obtained from TriNet in southern California. We investigated the effects of the depth, the mechanism and the propagation path by examining the results for events with different mechanisms and depths. We found that the path and site effects dominate so much that these effects are not obvious. By far the most dominant is the path-site...
